CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local nonprofit is launching what it believes is the first program of its kind—providing free car repairs to struggling families.

It’s all part of an ongoing effort to prevent homelessness.

Too often, car troubles trigger what can become a life-changing spiral for struggling local families.

“There are about 12,000 people a year just in Hamilton County that touch the homeless services system. So, there are a lot of people out there that are in need,” said the president of Strategies to End Homelessness, Kevin Finn.

Finn says his organization has found that a lack of reliable transportation is one of the biggest risk factors for families who fall into homelessness.

“Families are becoming homeless because they can't afford to get their car fixed and get to work,” said Brian Ibold, founder of The Help Squad. “Without a running vehicle, sustainable employment and the ability to earn a paycheck are virtually impossible.”

Ibold hopes to put a dent in that reality. His West Side-based Christian nonprofit is jump-starting a new initiative called the “Drive Program.” It’s partnering with local car care experts to help low-income families, particularly single parents.

On day one, four repair shops—Brogan Oil, Brogan and Folz Firestone, Bear Car Care, and Duebber’s Automotive—are committing $20,000 in free repairs. Marc Duebber calls it a game changer, providing a sense of relief for families in need.

“When we see people in the community that are making a difference, it's easy to put your money there because that's where my heart is, right?” Duebber said. “My heart is in making a difference with people.”

The Help Squad is calling on other repair shops, service stations, tow companies, mechanics, dealerships, and more to get behind the wheel.

“In order for this program to be a true success, we're going to need your help. Today is a call to action, my friends,” said Ibold. “If we all work together on this, we can prevent families from becoming homeless.”

The Help Squad is working with more than 30 local charities, including St. Vincent de Paul, Bethany House, and the Freestore Foodbank, to identify people who need assistance.

You don’t have to be a car expert to help. The Help Squad is also looking for donations, no matter how small. If you would like to learn how to get involved, click here.
