Commuters in parts of Connecticut should prepare for slippery conditions on Monday morning, which could make roads slick and hazardous.

That's according to an advisory issued Sunday night by the National Weather Service.

The weather service's Boston office, which covers Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties in Connecticut's northeast, warned that overnight rainfall could change to a slushy mix of sleet and snow between 2 and 4 a.m., and continue until between 9 and 11 a.m. on Monday. Up to 2 inches of snow could accumulate, primarily on grass.

"Motorists and commuters traveling during the pre-dawn hours into Monday morning should be aware of this changeover to wintry precipitation and the potential for slippery conditions," the weather service wrote. "Travel with extra caution if snow and sleet is encountered Monday morning."

The weather service said the wintry slush mix likely would be concentrated within 20 miles on either side of the Massachusetts Turnpike, but that it could extend as far south as Hartford.

In addition to the three northern Connecticut counties - which include the municipalities of Hartford, New Britain, Manchester, Coventry and Willimantic - the weather service issued the warning for the entirety of Rhode Island and much of eastern Massachusetts.

The two other weather service offices that cover Litchfield and Connecticut's four shoreline counties had not issued similar warnings as of Sunday at 9:30 p.m.
