A mystery in Lafayette Township: damp, early spring sod scarred by tired treads, a pile of bricks and few clues as to whose vehicle crashed into the Shoppes at Lafayette sign on the morning of Saturday, March 21.
According to a social media post from The Shoppes, a vehicle traveling on State Road 94 veered off the road and smashed into the brick and concrete monument near the rear entrance of the outdoor shopping plaza.
The monument was mostly destroyed — its outward facing script now reads only, "fayette," and large rectangular bricks are strewn into the grass and parking lot. No one has yet claimed responsibility for causing the damage.

The Shoppes issued a plea for any information regarding the incident, writing on social media that since the vehicle left the scene, it's "not only an accident but now a crime."
The New Jersey State Police are investigating the incident.
The Shoppes noted that "the vehicle involved would been heavily damaged."
Hundreds of comments and shares on the post offer clues from motor vehicle buffs dissecting the apparent damage and tire tracks (where's Mona Lisa Vito when you need her), patrons of the Shoppes providing times they arrived and the contemporaneous state of the sign, and plenty of folks proffering that, surely, there's a surveillance camera somewhere with footage of the incident.
If anyone has information on the incident, The Shoppes asked them to contact the Augusta Barracks of the State Police, (973) 383-8585.
